SmartNews changes
to a twice-monthly publication
SmartNews has changed its publishing cycle from weekly to twice-monthly to address preferences from its advertising partners.
During its 11 months in print, SmartNews has learned that advertisers want their ads to appear in editions that fall closest to the 15th and 30th of each month — the days when military, teachers and government workers are paid.
Advertisers also asked for longer “shelf life” — the amount of time editions with their ads are available to readers.
Switching to this “bimonthly” format addresses these two important issues for our advertisers.
“SmartNews is a free, community newspaper for readers,” SmartNews Publisher Randy Foster said. “Advertisers are the reason SmartNews is here. It is important to us that we listen to their needs.”
New editions of SmartNews will be published and distributed on May 9 and 23 in what the paper is calling “payday editions.” In future months, new editions will be available on the Fridays before paydays.
SmartNews published its first edition on June 5, 2007, and became a daily newspaper a week later, on June 12, 2007. It became a weekly newspaper in October 2007, after a fire destroyed its offices, archives and equipment.
“Our twice-monthly format makes SmartNews unique in Cumberland County,” Foster said. “We’re the only newspaper that can offer the timeliness our readers enjoy, and the proximity to paydays and the shelf life that advertisers want.”
SmartNews is locally owned and is a member of Associated Press.
